Why Reviews Are Written and Why Gifts Are Given

Why do I use social media? I use social media so I can stay connected with friends and or family members that I don't get to talk to very often. But I also feel like I enjoy/use different social media accounts for various reasons. Twitter would be kind of for amusement. Facebook would be share pictures and certain posts with family members. Instagram would be to share pictures with my friends and classmates. Social media has never really been that important to me. So if I ever decided to give up social media I would have to depend on sending pictures I wanted to share with my friends or family through text messages.
Today in my social media class, my professor, Dr. Vrooman discussed how most of the time we buy gifts to receive appraisal. Sometimes you buy a gift because you know you did something wrong; buy a gift for a loved one and send a lot of money on the gift and their partner just gets them socks or a gift card. These are all things you do when wanting receive appraisal.  Nowadays people are sadly doing nice stuff just to get nice things in return. I have always been one who likes giving gifts. I do not just give gifts to receive thanks and wanting something in return. I mainly just give gifts to make someone happy and put a smile on someone’s face. I hate whenever I do something for someone and they ask what I want. Maybe I am just doing that thing to help you out!

During class we also discussed why one would give reviews on products or on movies. I believe I give reviews on really good things or really terrible things. If I am giving someone a bad review I am not trying to “attack them”, as Vrooman would say. But I am simply just trying to help out the next person before they spend and waste their money on a bad product. I feel as if that only works for products. Movies, on the other hand, is very different. I usually do not leave bad reviews on movies. Everyone has their own taste in movies and I feel as if someone should create their own opinion on films. I feel if I am leaving a good review on a movie, it is to support the cast and directors and show my appreciation for all their hard work they put into making the movie.

I asked a few of my friends what is some stuff they have left reviews on and why they felt the need to leave a review. The first friend I asked was Brittany. She says she has not left many reviews but when she has they have been reviews on: restaurants, concerts, amazon, a few places on Yelp. I then asked her why she left those reviews and were they mainly positive or negative. She said sadly they were mainly all negative. She said, that product wise (so like on Amazon) she does not understand why someone would leave a good review if a product is just simply doing its job. She said she leaves bad reviews to kind of “warn” other people about the poor service she received. Brittany did mention that most of the reviews she has left were on concerts (she LOVES going to concerts). She claims that she always leaves good reviews on the concerts of people she supports and really fangirls over to try and get the band or singers attention (that really made me laugh lol). The second friend I asked about reviews was my friend Katelyn. Katelyn talked about how she leaves reviews on recipes. She used the example of a recipe she found online that was for some chocolate chip cookie. She said she used all the right ingredients and all the right amounts and she was very disappointed when she took them out of the oven and they were more cake like than cookies. So in the end she left a bad review. She said that after she left the review, a few hours later, she said the people who posted the recipe commented tips that she could use that will help her cookies. She said the same thing happened when she used a brownie recipe and the brownies ended up tasting like baking soda. She did want to say that she leaves a lot of good reviews too. She said that just recently she made these pancakes and wrote a review saying, “These pancakes rock! Super easy to make!” I asked her why she spends time writing good reviews on recipes and she said that she writes the good reviews so the person that post reviews will suggest other recipes that she thinks she will like and she said it's a nice encouragement/compliment.

In conclusion, I believe people leave reviews because consumers want to help other people.
According to Pew Research Center, 82% of American adults say they at least sometimes read online customer ratings or reviews before first time purchases, including 40% who say they always or almost always do so. Here is a link to a very helpful diagram that I think will prove my thesis. https://www.spectoos.com/5-real-motivations-behind-people-write-customer-reviews/ https://www.spectoos.com/5-real-motivations-behind-people-write-customer-reviews/ This link also helps explain how companies could get more consumers to right reviews about their products. "If a consumer has a positive experience with a product, they will want to let others know about it in order to help them have the same enjoyable experience, as well. They may also feel that the company should be rewarded with a positive review for the excellent service they provided"
