The Future of Artificial Intelligence: Representation of Dominance of the Internet and Social Media; and Its Benefits

*COMM 339, Texas Lutheran University, Seguin Texas, gwpogue@tlu.edu

Abstract:
Artificial Intelligence has been growing rapidly in popularity on the internet and across social media recently, and has inserted excitement, along with the fear of the unknown in millions of people online.  Corporations like Twitter are fighting to control the power of artificial intelligence by forming their own A.I. generator to eliminate misinformation. This new wave of information systems has raised the stakes of technological advancement and deems a bright future full of new inventions and possibilities. But, also raises questions of personal privacy and safety. Further research is to be conducted across multiple databases and social media platforms along with real life, in-time data of user interaction.  Each piece of collected data will then be broken down and analyzed thoroughly in order to assess the overall bias toward artificial intelligence.
Despite all the unknown questions we have about A.I., you cannot deny the vast capabilities this form of technology can take on and provide. With the right minds working together to control and mediate A.I., it is a very useful tool, that could one day make everyone’s life a little easier at the end of the day. Among the many benefits A.I. brings to the field of education and the business world, A.I. is taking leaps and bounds in the health field. Like nothing we have ever seen before, artificial intelligence can help assist in procedures, detect cancer and other health related issues, perform calculations, and determine proper treatments.

Methodology:
I analyzed and pulled information from important tweets and threads related to A.I., as well as tweets related to current efforts being made to control the dominance of A.I. I mostly used threads to get the peoples opinion and their overall opinion on the issue.  Lately I’ve been seeing many videos on my FYP of pictures people have asked an A.I. generator to create these amazing A.I. generated photos, some of which are very detailed, and look very real. Although I think some of these pictures are really badass, it’s also insanely scary at the same time. This could be a problem in the future with people creating fake photos of people out of spite, or revenge. I can see A.I being used for the wrong intentions. If A.I. is this advanced for how new it is, how powerful will it be in the future? I plan to use the top videos under the search word artificial intelligence, and only use the comments with the most likes in those videos

Analysis:
After searching and searching for the perfect tweets and articles, I have narrowed my search down to 3 Tweets, 1 TikTok, and an EBSCOhost article. Search criteria for this topic were narrow, as A.I. is such a massive topic with millions of moving parts. I wanted to cover an A.I. topic everyone could relate to, and have strong opinions on.  Privacy and safety are one of the biggest concerns when it comes to A.I. because it is such a new topic for most people, it is their number one concern. I also wanted to analyze the direction Twitter is going and what they are doing as a company to leverage A.I. to their liking. I analyzed two 60-Minutes interviews concerning the speed at which A.I. is growing, and the amount of data it is physically capable of storing. I analyzed a TikTok video that shares the story of A.I. impersonating another person; which puts things into perspective. The last piece of data I analyzed is a scholarly article found through the TLU library which goes in depth on a form of A.I. technology that can detect onset cancer.

Twitter’s Efforts
This tweet from The Wall Street Journal headlines “Elon Musk has created a new artificial intelligence company called X.AI that is incorporated in Nevada”. This tweet is an article from wsj.com, and I can’t access it any further, but after analyzing the tweet, I thought of 3 questions: Is Elon just playing around with his money, wanting to try new things? Is Elon getting closer to full control of Twitter using A.I. to his advantage? Or, will he put this company to good use, eliminating the spread of misinformation?
Google’s Genius Chatbot
This tweet from @60minutes headlines “Holy cow!” exclaimed Scott Pelley as he used Bard, Google’s newly released artificial intelligence chatbot. The technology appeared to possess the sum of all human knowledge, with microchips 100,000 times faster than the human brain. The tweet includes a 3:17 minute video of the 60minute interview, and it is truly frightening the amount of information A.I. knows, and how easy it performs millions of functions and tasks.

A Revolution is Coming
This tweet from @60minutes headlines “The revolution is coming faster than you know, says Google CEO Sundar Pichai. This Sunday, 60 Minutes looks at how rapidly advancing artificial intelligence is changing our world”. The comment, or reply, that stood out to me the most was from mister Roger Mcnamee, or @Moonalice, who says “Shame on @60minutes for allowing itself to be manipulated this way. The hype around these AI products is light years beyond their actual capabilities, while the capacity for harm is much greater than advertised”. I can agree with this, as so do 78 other people who liked it, and 17 who retweeted it.

A.I. Clones
In this TikTok video from user @the.self.defense.girl, plays a snippet from an interview with a mother who shares a horrific story of how a piece of A.I. technology called the mother on her cell phone, cloned her daughters voice, and then proceeded to blackmail the mother; demanding a large amount of money, or else her daughter will get hurt. The mother stated the A.I. voice sounded exactly like her daughter, and could not tell a difference whatsoever. This is extremely scary and a good reminder of how this could happen to anyone. A.I. is still a relatively new technological phenomenon, which poses questions as to how powerful it will be in the coming years.

A.I. in the Health Field
The EBSCO article Incidentally found resectable lung cancer with the usage of artificial intelligence on chest radiographs highlights the detection of early lung cancer using chest radiographs, using A.I. based lesion detection software as nodules. With the increasing use of A.I. in medical imaging, the actual benefit of A.I. in chest radiographs for the detection of unexpected early lung cancer needs to be validated. They provide 6 photos of a chest radiograph with A.I. detection, which is very cool to see.

Lit review: Mind of an athlete

I chose to do my lit review on the mind of an athlete because I wanted to find out why they really post. It always seems that some professional athletes seem so nonchalant when they're out in public or doing interviews, and then I would follow them on social media and see that some of them have a bunch of posts or some don’t have a lot of posts. Most of it showed them working on their craft or something within that craft, and it made me think about what goes through their minds when they post. Especially when it comes to college athletes, with all the censoring and everybody telling them what they can and can’t post, and for some that prohibits them from doing so because of what they say or post getting taken out of context and for some I know it doesn’t really matter because they don’t post or tweet much. It's important to me as a fellow athlete because I know why I post but I really want to see why these other athletes post and does the fact that people like the NCAA and others trying to censor us and tell us what we can or can’t post affect what they post and in what ways are they affected.

                                                         Methods

To test out this theory I conducted an interview with one of my teammates, then I did a self assessment asking myself the same things ,and also did a little bit of digging on social media and analyzed them to prove my theory.

                                                         Analysis

In my interview with my teammate I learned that the censoring that they try to put on us doesn’t affect him at all, which isn’t uncommon. Some people still post what they want while others might not post at all, my teammate also says even though he doesn’t post much he basically does it for himself and his friends. “I mostly do it when I look live asf, then I’ll put a fire ass caption and let all my friends go crazy in the comments.” Then after my self assessment going through the same questions, I realized that it was the same thing with me and why I post even though my friends might not go as crazy in the comments. In this study I learned that even though the higher ups try to censor us on what we can and can’t post on social media it doesn’t affect us at all because everyone has their own preference when it comes to posting.
