The Virality of TikTok Dances

Whether it's the 'Renegade' or 'Say So,' I'm sure you have seen at least one version of a popular TikTok dance somewhere on your preferred social media timeline. It seems like every day there's a new dance that everyone's dying to learn how to do. But why is everyone so obsessed with them?

TikTok's U.S. roots came from their merger with Musical.ly, an app that allowed users to make short lipsyncing videos. Because of this, most of TikTok culture is using audios separate from their own, whether it be a song or an audio clip from a movie or TV show. Through this, some users have gotten creative with audios and use them to tell a different story. Anything goes on TikTok, as there are so many different trends; so why dances?

We've seen many viral dance trends this past decade including the whip, the nae nae, and the infamous twerk. However, these are all dance moves you can easily bust out in the club or the middle school dance. TikTok dances are full on choreographies that take practice to master. Some dances are easy, while others are harder, but overall, these TikTok dances take a lot of effort to do, and yet everyone is doing them.

Why are TikTok dances so shareable? Well, for one, they're short. TikToks can only be up to 60 seconds long, so it makes it an easy share to a friend or family member who might have the attention span of a fish. People tend to not click on long videos to watch because of risk of being bored.

Another reason why these dances become so popular is because of the trendy music that accompanies it. For example, a few songs from a rising singer/rapper, Doja Cat, have been featured in these dances. It's also interesting how the videos loop after the initial play. Therefore, the song gets stuck in your head, and in turn, also the dance.

Ultimately, the videos are fun to watch, and therefore get shared for it. TikTok dances aren't just a thing for individuals to partake in. It's become so easy nowadays for people to turn to there friend and say, "You wanna learn this dance with me?" It's become the new sleepover activity, and everyone can get involved.

The next time you see a TikTok dance video on your timeline, will you share it?
