Project Topic Introduction

I’ve decided to look at the relationship between consumerism and guilt (this may change as I further my research). Specifically, I will be looking at the conversations surrounding the purchase of Hogwarts Legacy, an online video game which concepts were created by JK Rowling, who within the last couple of years has become extremely controversial within the LGBTQ+ community because she posted multiple transphobic tweets in 2020 and also for themes and tropes in some of her books. This will be a rhetorical analysis of the arguments present in these conversations. To analyze these arguments, I will be using Perelman’s New Rhetoric methodology, along with furthering his interpretations in my own way to define the rhetorical devices I find. Other variables I will be using to further analyze these conversations and arguments are Ethical Consumption, Consumerism, Capitalism, and if it is needed Wittgenstein’s Family Resemblance philosophy. I plan to find an explanation, at the very least, as to how responsible consumers are for the things they purchase, if they’re even responsible at all. Another relationship I will be looking at is the relationship between want and need. Specifically, what is considered a want and what is considered a need within Capitalism.
