Spreadability & the Nerve of Banksy

I specifically remember the first time I learned about Banksy and what this spectacular street artist stood for. Jay Walker (this is his real name i'm serious), gets to hold the title of one of the coolest people I know because of the art and music he has given to me. A book, Wall and Piece, holds classic and stunning Banksy pieces, and belonged to none other than Jay. To add context to this dude (jay) and how I knew him- he was my mom's boyfriend at the time and we lived at his place during my senior year of highschool. Here's a pic of the dude:

Jay has always been a fan of bold and powerful art, and he got me into the same style- although I have endless appreciation for artists like Matisse, Monet and Renoir. From Jay- I got to experience and intake Basquiat, Banksy and Schiele. These guys are raw and undaunted and I appreciate that they can put that emotion and facade into the world through their art. I envy that power at times- I feel that I could probably never do something Like they have done because everyone is trying too hard in this day and age. People have the mindset that if they try hard enough that they will succeed, but there are countless others like them. Everything has already been done! Sorry to break it to you! Dreams (most of the time) are for fools who think they can capture them.

The reason there are few who succeed is because they don't give a f***. Banksy is by all means an artist who holds power. He has the world waiting and anticipating his next move. All the time. In 2010, he got listed as top 100 most influential people(found that here ). I'm not surprised considering his edginess and fanbase. Of all the people who know about Banksy- what's not to admire? He's the perfect artist. A graffiti master, an activist, a filmmaker... He's a boiling pot of things love- resistance and beauty.
Asked Jay to send a picture of the book that he had- how I discovered Banksy

So the spreadability part... I wonder what people think when they wake up in the morning, take a walk in England and see what looks like a Banksy piece that wasn't on that wall the day before. Do they instantly snap a picture and send it to whoever they can? Do they admire it then let someone else spread the word? I figured it out when I found that Banksy has an Instagram on this page. He verifies his art when he posts it there! This is sort of mesmerizing to me because i'm learning about social media and I figure out that this spectacular and elusive artist is active on social media. It baffles and interests me. This is how his pieces get spread. This is how we know they're legit.

I know you know about the auction incident with Banksy. Let's set the scene. Banksy's art, Girl With Balloon is just sold for 1.4 million. Holy sh*t. Everyone is clapping, then there is a sea of gasps as the art slips through the gilded frame, seemingly shredding itself... doing something that has never been done. This was deliberate of course. Do we know why Banksy did this? Sure! Here, it says that he planted the device in the frame in case it ever went up for auction. He also posted the clip on his Instagram with the caption, "The urge to destroy is also a creative urge." which is awesome as hell.

I remember seeing Banksy's Valentine's day art when we were in Social Media class and I got so excited because of how cool that piece was. After looking on Banksy's Instagram, I also got to experience his preliminary sketch for the piece and see how his mind works. How a Banksy is created. It was really cool because he's so blunt on his social media. He straight up said that he was glad his art got vandalized because the early sketches were "way cooler". I know when I found out his work was vandalized I was pissed... But after Banksy admitted he was "glad" his work was tampered with- I felt more peaceful and found myself agreeing with Banksy... Why is that?

So we know now that a Banksy is verified and spread by his posting of pieces on his social media. His art is taken in and admired by many- especially by me. There is a lot to be learned by this boldness and intricacy of Banksy's nerve. He is what many aspire to be, and gives us our dose of beauty and daring nature that we eat up so readily. We need a Banksy in this age because we ourselves find it hard to find a sense of individuality. With Banksy and his art- we can experience and live freely through his actions.
